Chill Factore

Changing Village

The Chill Factore had three aims for this project; to reduce queuing times, to aid visitors who were confused about where to go once they had collected their tickets and to increase repeat bookings.

We undertook a visitor flow analysis, which showed that a first-time visitor taking part in an hour-long activity could spend as much time collecting tickets, clothing, equipment and waiting for a lesson, plus returning them afterwards, as spent on their activity on the snow. This highlighted that a visitor’s experience pre- and post- snow activity are as important as the activity itself and form part of their overall experience, so it was agreed that a total refurbishment of the Changing Village would give maximum benefit to visitors.

Our next step was to fully understand the operational requirements, which we did through workshops with the Chill Factore team and looking at the visitor journey. After many alternative configurations were discussed with the Chill Factore team, we eventually produced a scheme that ticked all the boxes, and also allowed the Changing Village to stay open to the public throughout the works.

We created a bright and airy space with colours chosen from the Chill Factore branding, which compliment the colour palette of snow sports clothing, together with the introduction of a new lighting scheme. The budget signage scheme was based on simple, oversized messages with a focus on less is more. We also designed a bespoke storage system for snowboards, which provides a higher stock storage density than any system we could find. Likewise, all the equipment desks are bespoke designed and developed, whilst keeping a keen eye on a tight budget.

NRN did a superb job redesigning and project managing our Changing Village. This was the biggest internal project that the business had funded in 10 years and NRN led the entire process from Concept Design, through Masterplanning, to Detailed Design and Delivery. As Project Managers they carefully worked around our busy guest operations, ensuring a phased approach that never impinged on the guest experience. Good communication and regular site meetings ensured that the inevitable challenges and obstacles were easily overcome. The quality of the finished work is exceptionally good and I would have no hesitancy in recommending them or using their services again myself.
